When we look at the World around us we see plastic, wood, metal, cloth and various composites. Most people think of belts, purses and wallets when you talk about leather. In our job we get the treat of seeing leather and the places it can be used that you don't normally think of.
Everyone who uses horses knows about saddles and bridels. We get to make slobber straps, which are for attaching a special type of rein called a mecate. We also make a lot of cowboy cuffs, which are built to protect the cowboys forearm from rope burn, banging against things and other abuse a person working with cattle can endure.
We also get to repair things and make improvements to the original design based on our experiences with extreme conditions during riding and roping.
Working with gun owners to make holsters, slings and more is another thing we enjoy doing. We get to make some things like the take down case we made at Christmas for a 22 take down rifle. or custom butt stock covers which protect the stock of the rifle.
Our latest project was this cool "Sissy Pad". They are used to protect a welders arm from heat and from burning against hot metal or catching chunks of slag. Normally they are very plain and kind of ugly. This welder wanted something unique and appealing to the eye.
Leather is a very durable material that can take a lot of abuse and last a lifetime if cared for properly. So when you think of leather think of the saddle that is 100 years old and still going strong. Besides once plastic or other materials are broken they are finished. Leather can be repaired, stretched, moulded and sewn. I know it's one of my top choices for many applications in my home and life.
